Tulameen, British Columbia, Canada is a small recreational community in British Columbia, Canada, about 20 kilometres northwest of the town of Princeton on the Crowsnest Highway (Hwy 3), and about 185 kilometres east from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Located at the south end of Otter Lake and just north of the Tulameen River, it is on the lee side of the Canadian Cascades mountain range and enjoys a slightly semi-arid climate, sheltered from the heavy rains west of that range. Tulameen is home to vacation cabin rentals for year round enjoyment of Otter Lake, including the luxurious Otter Lake Cabins.
The community of Tulameen is an historic gold, platinum, and coal mining town and has long been one of British Columbia's popular recreational areas, offering hiking, fishing, canoeing, tubing, swimming, water-skiing, cross-country skiing, gold panning, and many other activities. The community of Tulameen and the Tulameen River derive their name from a Thompson Indian word meaning 'red earth'. A steep bank of the Tulameen River four miles north of Princeton was the source of the much-prized red ochre for which the Indians travelled from afar. Geographically, Tulameen sits between the eastern bank of the Tulameen River and the Southern end of Otter Lake.
Tulameen has approximately 500 full-time residents, however, this number grows much larger during the summer months as tourists, outdoorsmen and nature lovers alike flock to escape to a simpler life. The Tulameen General Store has gas pumps and food. There is also a restaurant, post office, liquor store, video rentals, bike rentals (Crossroads Bike Rentals), community centre, outdoor skating rink, library, volunteer fire department, and skidoo dealer & repair centre. |
